Fellows
The Training Fellows (TF) programme is designed to further improve the effectiveness of the staff in the 5 Institutes of Teacher Education (ITE) by developing and implementing training programmes with the ITE staff on a continuous professional development programme. This will contribute to Malaysia’s Vision 2020 - which envisages the country transforming into a knowledge-based economy. This programme aligns with the Government’s major educational objectives as set out in the Tenth Malaysia Plan and National Education Blueprint to reduce the imbalance in rural and urban education and enhance the status of the teaching profession. It is also an important component of the Ministry of Education’s (MoE) MBMMBI programme ( Memartabatkan Bahasa Malaysia dan Memperkukuh Bahasa Inggeris).

More importantly, this programme assists the MoE to lead in irrevocably changing and significantly improving the teaching and learning of English in Malaysia.
The programme involves the placement of 15 Training Fellows with significant English teaching and training experience and high level academic qualifications across the five participating Institutes of Teacher Education. Three Training Fellows are placed in each participating Institute of Teacher Education.
The primary responsibility of Training Fellows is to develop and implement a comprehensive and systematic training programme and to work with Malaysian colleagues on continuous professional development programmes to upgrade teaching methodology and proficiency in English. Further, Training Fellows are expected to conduct action research into the effectiveness of English language teaching and to be resources and advisers to the Institutes on improving English language teaching both inside and outside the Institutes.
This programme is intended to enhance the knowledge, pedagogical skills and competencies of the ELT staff in each Institute of Teacher Education (ITE) where Training Fellows are deployed. The Training Fellow will implement the programme through a combination of formal training, mentoring and coaching. The Fellow is required to collaborate with the ELT staff to plan, teach, observe and evaluate in order to develop the latter’s knowledge, skills and competencies.
